Dear ladies and gents,
as I have pointed out previously there isn’t much to watch these days. However here are a couple of new and returning UK shows that you might want to check out in June.
Created by Paul Abbott (Shameless) Hit & Miss is a new drama for Sky 1 starring Chloë Sevigny as Mia, a contract killer with a secret – she is a pre-op transsexual who was born a male. To further complicate matters Mia learns she had a child with a former lover and that same former lover (now on her death bed) names as her the legal guardian of the child. Complicated, no?
Starlings is a new comedy series for Sky 1 and it stars Brendan Coyle (you might know him as the long suffering Mr. Bates of Downton Abbey) and Lesley Sharp (you might know her as DC Scott on Scott & Bailey) as Terry and Jan, middle class couple living with their three kids in Derbyshire. With all of these generations under the same roof matters get even more complicated when Terry’s dad moves in with the family and Bell, one of their children, gives birth.
I quite liked Silk the first time around and this season is proving to be equally interesting. Starring Maxine Peake as Martha Costello, freshly appointed Queen’s Counsel, still faces plenty of ethical dilemmas and doing everything she can to help her clients. Give it a watch if you like legal dramas and Rupert Penry-Jones (and his naked bottom).
Based on the books written by Ann Cleeves Vera is another returning series, this time for ITV. It features Brenda Blethyn as DCI Vera Stanhope, a workaholic with a complicated past who gets a tad bit obsessive about her cases. After seeing a few episodes I would recommend seeing this one, especially if you are a fan of British crime series. It does not disappoint.
