The Secret Circle – a review

    Dear readers,

maybe I am a glutton for punishment but I have arbitrarily decided I’m going to try to see as many pilots as possible over the next weeks. Why? I don’t know really. It seems kinda wasteful to have all this new TV shows coming up and I maybe end up watching one possibly two (if lucky) new shows each season. I know it is a tricky business especially if you love a show and so many pilots/new shows do not get renewed or even get a full season pick up. Plus I’ve become a snob when it comes to TV as well. I’ll only watch if it has an actor/actress that I like, great writers I admire, superb plotline or anything that is produced by USA Network. So in a bid to squash my own snobism I’ll try to keep an open mind (operative word being try).

So on to The Secret Circle, the latest CW teen production. I think CW is trying to make witches happen. Not that I blame them anything supernatural has been very popular over the last few years. That and anything with zombies.

The Secret Circle is based on books written by L. J. Smith, who is a young-adult writer. I haven’t read the source material so I can’t really compare and contrast but I really did not hate the pilot. Which I mean come on, it’s a CW production! The only thing of theirs I liked was Veronica Mars and of course Supernatural.

The story is about a teenage girl Cassie (played by Britt Robertson) whose mum dies in an accident. Cassie moves to Chance Harbor, a small town in Washington, to be with her grandmother. Everything is fine and dandy for about one day until she learns that she is a descendant of witches and is in fact herself a witch with great power. And her new friends seem to be witches who need the last person to complete the circle and harness extraordinary power. All without their parents finding out (obviously). But the problem is that their parents were witches as well and it is hinted in the pilot that 16 years ago one of their spells/circle thingygummies went wrong and Cassie’s dad died in the process. And that is why Cassie’s mum moved away – to try and protect her daughter from witchcraft.

The pilot was well written and the actors are not atrociously bad, in fact they are not bad at all. There is a scene when Cassie runs off to the forest and her potential love interest (who also happens to be a witch and has a girlfriend) do a spell and thousands of rain drops defy gravity and go up in the air. Yes, it’s all sparkly and shiny and corny, however that is the only Twilight moment and that is definitely a plus. I don’t know if the Secret Circle will hold my interest for long because well… it’s just not my thing. However I will see how it plays out – if it gets more hardcore (like for example Supernatural although I doubt it) they got themselves a semi-regular viewer.

Anyhow down below you can find the trailer for the Secret Circle and please if you have seen it let me know what you thought.
