Summer TV season – the good and the bad

  • Dear readers,

September is just around the corner. It still might be hot and sunny but to me September means end of summer. So I thought to do a little recap of some of the stuff that was consistently good and consistently bad during this summer TV season. It is worth noting that this summer (unlike previous years) there was actually plenty to watch. Royal Pains, Necessary Roughness, Suits (yes I’m a sucker for anything that USA Network decides to throw our way) Bourdain, Flipping Out… there was a lot to choose from. But these four shows listed below were the ones that delighted and annoyed me in equal measure.

    The Good

    Leverage

I’ll preface this by saying Leverage is not rocket science. But it is a damn good watch. Fast paced, with snappy dialogues and great cast (who by the looks of it seems to have fun). It always without fail sends me into a spasm of giggles. The summer season just ended so you will have to wait until November for new episodes but if you haven’t watched it by now do give it a go, I promise you will not be disappointed.

    Haven

Haven has turned into comfort TV for me. I do not know why. How can anything based on a Stephen King’s novel be comfort TV is beyond me. But I love it all the same. Maybe it’s the location (small coastal town in Maine). Maybe it’s the quirky cast of characters. Maybe I feel bad because the majority of the residents are troubled. Or maybe I just like Stephen King too much and I’ll watch anything that has his name attached to it. Be as it may it is a must watch for me and if you haven’t seen it by now make sure to check it out.

    The Bad

    True Blood

True Blood was an old favorite. Yes we know it’s a bit gross and it can put you off your food. But it can be good fun. Or at least it used to be good fun. Now I’m not sure anymore. At first I thought it was because it does take me a while to get into a new season. But sufficient number of episodes has aired and I’m still not into it. There is so much going on. And not in a good way. The whole Sookie – Eric – Bill love triangle, I mean seriously? It should be hot (operative word being should) and it just isn’t (and I’m not even talking about Eric’s hair situ). It’s just a mess (not a hot mess mind, because that would at least be something).

    Torchwood

It very frustrating to watch Torchwood these days. For a minute there I thought there were growing pains, show was moved from UK to US, only three people from the original cast remained but even now 8 episodes in, I still don’t like it. And it is frustrating to watch because the premise is so freaking good I cannot believe they’ve managed to mess it up!
A few days ago I’ve read a great post by Tiffany from TV Addict and I’ve found myself nodding in agreement a lot. I do disagree with her on Ianto though. Even though I like Gareth David-Lloyd and even though I loved Ianto as a character I do not think viewers (casual viewers or rabid fans) were all that surprised (well… after the initial shock wore off) that he was killed.

One thing Torchwood did well was killing off its characters. And one thing Torchwood *used* to do well is controversy. New series of Torchwood did give us one glimpse into the Torchwood of old – when the ovens were introduced into the story. So horrible, so ludicrous, so unimaginable in this day and age… and yet in the context of the story believable. If that makes sense. I honestly thought that was the turning point. But I was wrong.

So tell me dear readers was there anything you simply had to see this summer? Anything you hated? Do let me know in the comments below.
