An odd selection of favorite movie soundtracks
-
Dear readers,
the other day I was watching Hanna. Have you seen it? What did you think? I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. I loved the story, the cast, I loved it visually and I loved the music. The soundtrack was entirely composed by Chemical Brothers. And as it always is with music in movies, it gave it that something, an edge I think, it possibly wouldn’t have without it.
Anyhow that got me thinking what were some of the movie soundtracks that have stayed with me over the years. And down below you can find my list. Obviously it is entirely subjective, I’m not music critic or anything. I’d love to hear what were some of the more memorable movie soundtracks you have heard over the years. Please leave your favorites in the comments below.
Monsoon Wedding – I loved (LOVED!) Monsoon Wedding. It is about a traditional Punjabi wedding where all of the family gets together to celebrate but as it is with families, things are never that simple – there are secrets and resentments all bubbling up under the surface. I loved the movie, but I found the music mesmerizing.
Trainspotting – I detest needles. It’s not a full blown phobia, but I don’t like them (all down to an incident with IV/needle/not-so-light-handed nurse). So what on Earth possessed me to see Trainspotting I will never know. But I liked the movie (well that toilet scene was gross but otherwise I loved it). I mean Lust for Life, Perfect Day on same soundtrack? And then there was Born Slippy that I cannot resist to this day.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch – I always loved Guy Ritchie’s movies (well apart from the rubbish one with Madonna). And the music in his movies is always an eclectic mix that in theory should never work but it totes does.
Lost in Translation – I’ve seen Lost in Translation and at the time I was maybe 2 weeks in my postgrad thingy. Different country, different people and most importantly – hm how shall I put this – not very appetizing food? (I get very cranky when I’m hungry). Anyhow needless to say I could relate. But it got better. SO. much better. All of it (apart from the food). And still have that soundtrack on my iPhone (if for nothing else then Bill Murray crooning More Then This).
Underground – Kusturica always rubbed me the wrong way as an individual. But I enjoy his movies. He almost always collaborates with Goran Bregovic who usually borrows shamelessly from the old Balkan folk songs. It is an acquired taste but I do like it.
Cabaret – musicals were never my thing. Two reasons a) I find it rather odd that people would just break into a song (what.is.wrong.with.you?) and b) it usually masks the fact there isn’t much going on in terms of story line. That’s why I never got on Glee bandwagon. Having said that Cabaret is the only musical I could stomach. Not only stomach, but rather enjoy.
Cabaret clips have been disabled for embedding, but you can find a clip here.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? – country music isn’t really my thing. But I loved this bluegrass, gospel, blues soundtrack. I still have it somewhere, as in CD form (I know, shock horror).
Pulp Fiction – another wonderful mix of songs and soundtrack that I have on a CD, stashed somewhere.
