Franklin & Bash – a review

Dear readers,
we are currently right in the middle of barren TV wasteland that happens when normal season ends and summer season still hasn’t kicked off. And since beggars can’t be choosers I am not really too disconcerting about what I watch at this time.
I have been catching up on BBC’s the Shadow Line and I like it so far. I’m still watching the Killing although the pace has slowed down considerably (but I’m definitely hanging in there because I do want to know who the murderer is).Anyhow at this point I’ll give just about anything a shot (this is what is next in line so you see I’m not picky).
So I thought I’d give Franklin & Bash a whirl. I mean TNT is behind Leverage, how bad can it be?
Hmmm well… the premise is promising enough – a funny legal procedural about two renegade lawyers that bring their game to a stuffy law firm – that sounds like an ideal summer show, no?
Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar star as Franklin and Bash, two ambulance chasing lawyers who, while not using any means necessary to liberate their clients, munch on what looks like delicious food and debate which one of them would stand a better chance of sleeping with their favorite celebrities. They also throw fun parties that involve hot tubs and prancing around butt naked. The show even has Malcolm McDowell for crying out loud. The thing is – it’s just not that funny. And it tries sooo hard. I haven’t seen such case of Try ever since the House show runners decided to make Cuddy/House happen.
Franklin & Bash tries to be funny, tries to be quirky, tries to be all hip and fun and it just well… isn’t. For all I know maybe I am being too demanding and judging way too harshly. For all I know maybe the second episode will be great. It does take shows a few episodes to get into the groove. So I’m willing to give it a go.
But for crying out loud ease on the Try. And just fix it so that it is funny.
Tell me dear readers, have you seen Franklin & Bash? And if you did, what did you think?
