The Way We Get By trailer

Dear faithful readers,
I watched a good few documentaries over the last few months. I don’t mind the sensationalism of Michael Moore (well not that much anyway) to get his message across or the goofiness and sheer cheek that are the Yes Men but it is always the individual stories that resonate most deeply with me. The people that have been wronged in some way and they turn their anger and grief into something that very much resembles grace. Yes, if it is not obvious I am a sucker for human interest stories.
The Way We Get By is one of those documentaries that will get you even if you are most hardcore of cynics. No stunts, no pranks – just people trying to do good, selfless deeds the best they know how. It features three senior citizens who are part of a group of people in Bangor, Maine who greet and send off American troops to Iraq. Even if you are anti-war I would urge you to see this documentary because it is not really about the politics at all. It doesn’t preach or lecture. It is about simple human kindness we have lost somewhere along the way.
The movie premiered at SXSW in 2009 where it won an award as the best documentary feature and it was directed by Aron Gaudet whose own mum is one of the Maine’s greeters.
