2012 a review
-
Dear faithful readers,
have you seen 2012?
Directed by Roland Emmerich and staring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Tandi Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt and Woody Harrelson it is text book disaster movie (as you can see from some of the key points down below – cliche after cliche after cliche).
- the anti-hero who is brilliant but also bit of a slacker and/or an asshole
- the long suffering ex-wife who is still in love with her ex-husband
- the evil rich horrible guy of Russian or possibly Eastern European origin
- one spoiled brat
- one cute kid
- one noble/naive/moral scientist
- one opportunist usually in a place of power or decision making
- touching father – son moment
- little cute dog being saved at the last minute
- one noble president of the United States
- some outlandish scientific theory that turns out not to be so outlandish after all
- numerous people dying
- plenty of kumbaya we-are-the-world moments
- special effects galore with Earth cracking, buildings being blown up, airplanes exploding etc
But do you know I didn’t hate it? I know – I surprise myself sometimes.
Given the story line is a bit (ok maybe a lot) crappy and the cast (which is not half bad) did the best they could with what they had. However it was nowhere near yawn inducing as I expected. Numerous plot twists and turns are expected with this type of movie since they do want to drag it out as much as possible but I don’t know if it is due to my blond brain cells or because the special effects are so damn good I was riveted for the most part of movie.
And special effects are indeed outstanding. Given I still haven’t seen Avatar so I cannot compare with the latest be-all-end-all special effects movie but overall I was quite happy I have seen it. It is not deep, it does not really make you think but it is a great pop corn movie. And sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered.
So tell me dear readers – have you seen 2012? What did you think?
