Flashforward

Dear faithful readers, have you had the chance to check out ABC’s latest offering Flashforward?

Do you know it is not half bad really. I did not want to write anything before I have seen at least 2 episodes and given it is still the early days and there is plenty of time to completely mess it up (Heroes anyone?) but the outlook is pretty good. Bare in mind this is coming from a person who does not care much for Joseph Fiennes at all. I do have a bit of a problem with his accent though, technically it’s perfect but just a tad bit too perfect, like he watched gazillion of movies/TV shows to see how an American investigator is supposed to sound like. It is just a tad bit grating is all. But don’t let my snobbery put you off (I’m used to Hugh Laurie school of American accent) – Flashforward is quite good.

The series is based on a science fiction book written by Robert J. Sawyer that was published in 1999. Of course as it usually happens when Hollywood gets a hold of book rights the content of the book was adapted and somewhat bastardized but the concept is the same – on an ordinary day all of humanity loses consciousness for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. While out for count all of humanity experience a flash forward – a look into their future 6 month in time.
Once they all come to people are dead, planes have crashed from the skies and whole world is in disarray. And this is when the story slowly starts to unravel.

So far it is keeping me interested. And amused. The actors are good, the story line holds water so far and there are plenty of surprising twists and turns. I was also surprised to see that Marc Guggenheim (of Eli Stone fame) is one of the executive producers and writers. It does not seem like his type of thing. BUT given how things ended up with Eli Stone (yes I’m still bitter about that) I’m glad he found a good gig.

Another thing that keeps being brought up – similarities with Lost. I think that is just being lazy, not giving it enough thought and not looking at the big picture.

Given we had plenty of flash forwards and flashbacks in Lost (so many in fact I thought my nose would start to bleed from the strain) but in a completely different context. With a completely different storyline. No show will ever replace Lost because it is too damn good and innovative, but I don’t really think with Flashforward the creators really wanted to do that.

Network execs on the other hand would want you to believe this is Lost 2.0 (just check out the trailer). But take my word for it – it is not. Flashforward is quite capable of standing on it’s own. Of course if they don’t mess it up down the road.

So dear readers have you seen Flashforward? And more importantly did you like it? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
