British spin-offs I didn’t even know existed

  • Dear faithful readers,

by now you all know I am always on the look-out for good British series. Especially comedy series. Not that their dramas or crime series aren’t good mind you but if there was one thing I love about the Brits is their wit.

Anyhow over the last few weeks I have found a few series I didn’t even know existed. And the thing is they are spin-offs series of some of my favorites over the years. So I thought I might share these with you in case you are craving some good telly.

The Green Green Grass – would you believe it that this is the Only Fools and Horses spin-off? I cannot believe I wasn’t aware this series existed before. The series was also written by John Sullivan and it follows none other then Boycie, his wife Marlene and their son Tyler after they have fled Peckham from the Driscoll brothers and moved to the countryside. There were 4 seasons altogether and a number of old time regulars have all made an appearance.

Grace and Favour – I have been stuck watching Are You Being Served? for quite a few weeks now. I completely forgot how much I actually enjoyed that show and how giggle inducing it was. What I didn’t know that there was a sequel to the original series called Grace and Favour (or in the States Are You Being Served? Again!). The former employees of Grace Brothers department store learn after death of Young Mr. Grace that they have inherited an old manor in the countryside. They cannot sell it but can live there and run it as a hotel. Unfortunately there were only 2 season but the story lines continued from episode to episode and it is quite a delightful watch. I love Mollie Sugden and her pussy Tiddles, but my favorite by far is John Inman – there aren’t sufficient words to describe how much I love his portrayal of Mr. Humphries. Love. Him.

Lewis – any of you who have ever watched ITV’s Inspector Morse you are probably familiar with his faithful sidekick Detective Lewis. It did constitute for an enjoyable Sunday viewing with good cast and the pretty Oxford countryside. But after John Thaw lost his battle with cancer we thought we saw the last ever episode of Inspector Morse. However the interest of viewing public was such that the creators of the show decided to take a chance with a spin-off this time featuring Robbie Lewis (played by Kevin Whatley) as the main character. The series is quite successful as according to reports the filming of fourth series should start this summer. So if you have enjoyed Inspector Morse and if you like your good quality ITV crime series you might as well check it out.
