Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday – Peter’s Friends

  • Dear faithful readers, happy Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday!

I was in for a bit of a surprise when I switched on the telly last week. It was middle of the afternoon and that is not the normal time I would switch the telly on. And there it was – Peter’s friends.

I have been meaning to see this particular movie for ages however my local DVD store does not really have anything older then 2000. So I was really delighted that I finally got a chance to see it.

Directed in 1992 by Kenneth Branagh it does have a stellar cast – Kenneth Branagh himself, Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery, Imelda Stauton, Alphonsia Emmanuel and of course our lovely Mr. Fry.

It is a blast from the past as there are many smooth cheeks to be seen (Tony Slattery had quite a revealing butt shot) and it is accompanied by a soundtrack that is bound to get many of the 80s children humming along. It centers around New Year’s festivities organized by Peter (Mr. Fry) who gets all of his friends together to make a big announcement. But as it is with friendships it does not matter how much time you have spent apart, the minute you get together the usual bickering commence as no time has passed at all.

I have this urge to talk about Peter’s friends as a small movie – and yes compared to the Indiana Jones, Iron Man or the Incredible Hulk it is a small movie as there are no whizz bangs and doo dahs to keep us occupied. But I forgot how much pleasure it can be to watch a movie that is written well and that centers on a handful of characters and their relationships with each other.
Some bits had me snorting with laughter while some bits are so painfully uncomfortable I had to squint not to see it (I am a wimp what can I say?).

Peter’s friends is a witty, warm and it makes you think.

    Any other reasons to watch?

Well apart from the obvious that it is a movie with our lovely Mr. Fry and apart from the fact you can see Tony Slattery in all of his smooth arse glory, Hugh Laurie being his lovely self or Emma Thompson who I simply adore, it does have my favorite Mr. Fry quote up-to-date – “I am not in the vagina business”.

Mr. Fry, I know you really do not have to remind me :)
