I saw Dark Knight on Monday. First I thought Nah it is too much hype, besides it is a Batman movie for crying out loud! But I stand corrected – it is the best movie I have seen this year and in all probability the best movie I saw in the last few years.
And Heath Ledger’s performance goes beyond exceptional into the realm of well and truly superb.
After seeing Dark Knight and under the impression of such magnificent performance it got me thinking – what were the best nutcases in movies?
Dear readers happy Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday!
I do hope you realize I have not gone bonkers and decided to profess my love for Stephen Fry.
I am really fond of the man but I’m talking about a afternoon play that aired on BBC Radio 4 a few weeks ago.
So, we have a first trailer for the “Watchmen” movie, and, my, doesn’t it look great! Zack “300″ Snyder seems to have once again succeeded into depicting comic book illustrations and style on the big screen. But will this be enough? After all, these are “The Watchmen” we’re talking about.
A side note for the uninitiated: published in the 1980s by DC Comics, “Watchmen” was a first graphic novel to seriously examine the superhero genre making them much more human, fallible and messed up because, well – as Bob Kane, creator of Batman said – you have to have a loose screw in your head in order to put on tights and fight crime. The result was dark and sophisticated story about old superheroes in the alternate history 1980es where Cold War is almost hot and Richard Nixon serves his fourth term in the White House. Cheery stuff.
Illustrated by Dave Gibbons (also responsible for one of the movie posters) “Watchmen” were written by mad English genius Alan Moore also responsible for “V for Vendetta”, “From Hell” and “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”. The fun part is he hated the movie versions of his graphic novels so much he even refused to take his legal share of the copyright money.
It remains to be seen will Synder be up for the task. “300″ was visually beautiful but it’s was also a movie with really simple story and almost laughingly one-dimensional characters. “Watchmen”, with it’s moral ambiguity, complex characters and parallel plot lines will be a whole different beast.
Personally, I’d love to see Christopher Nolan’s take on the story, but I’ll satisfy myself with his second Batman movie.
Ever since I was little I loved spy movies. It all seemed so exciting and glamorous. Traveling the world and fighting evil. And the gadgets were cool. Oh yes there were dooh daahs even back in the day before iPods and iPhones were created.
But gadgets aside there is something incredibly alluring about spies (I think we have James Bond to blame for that).
Dear faithful readers, happy Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday!
I have found a great little nugget on Youtube that I thought you might enjoy especially since it features Tony Slattery. And I know Tony Slattery is still very popular because it is one of the most popular searches that leads some of you dear readers to Couchslobs.
And lets face it – Mr. Fry has not graced us with podgram in ages (Mr. Fry, big raspberry to that).
This is a clip from ITV3 called the Drama trails which features Tony Slattery while he shows us around Swaffham, where bits of Kingdom are taped. Ha, they should have featured Wells-next-the-Sea as well (preferably with some water too since the last time I was there all the boats were stranded in the sand).
Now I have said it before and I will say it again – even though I think QI should be prescribed instead of anti depressants, there is one man (yes besides lovely Mr. Fry) that tickles me pink every single time.
And that would be Robin Williams. And if have not seen his stand up Live on Broadway I would urge you to Here are 2 of my favorite clips and one of my favorite sayings, so enjoy.
What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul. – Yiddish Proverb
The program is called The Making of Me and it will feature none other then John Barrowman.
We all know John Barrowman from Dr.Who and Torchwood and we all know Barrowman is very open about his sexual preferences. Barrowman will try to find out with a help of medical tests, psychologists and other assorted scientists was he born a homosexual or did his upbringing played a part as well.
See, who needs Paris Hilton and her quest for a BFF?
And I am aware BBC is run by a bunch of codgers, but if they can come up with stuff like this, I say keep doing what you are doing otherwise the inevitable will happen – we will drown in crap television.
Oh I absolutely love this story I have read via Pop Candy today. You can read all about over at The Wordslinger blog (make sure to check it out, there are some great Stephen King related articles).
You know how we love our Stephen King books here at Couchslobs. Plus I know we do have some hard core Stephen King fans that pop by from time to time, so they’ll probably love this too.
Well it turns out that in 1984 Stephen King and Peter Straub wrote the novel called The Talisman. It is a fantasy coming of age story and not really a horror story much to the bafflement of many critics who decided that is the reason not to like it (oh lighten up will ya?!).
Be as it may even though some critics might have panned it, the fans loved it (I have not read it myself and all I will say is damn and 3 shots of blast I was in bookstore yesterday!).
But this where the story gets interesting. Steven Spielberg bought the movie rights 25 years ago, however the movie never saw the light of the day.
Now one brilliant Canadian director Mathieu Ratthe took it upon himself to create a demo for the movie in a bid to catch Spielberg’s attention. And I have to say it looks fantastic and I have not even read the book.
Well lets hope that the power of Internet will help Mathieu Ratthe on his own personal quest and that his brilliant trailer will get him noticed.
The trailer is down below, make sure to check it out.
Dear faithful readers, happy Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday!
For today’s edition of Stephen Fry Appreciation Monday I will do a little news round up. I am trying to obtain a copy of Bright Young Things to review so this will have to do until then.
