Shameful TV confessions - everybody has one

shameful-tv-confessions-everybody-has-one

Recent chat I had with Hawks in the comments section got me thinking. We both professed to be TV junkies and I for one know way too much TV trivia then what is considered normal (the amount of useless information I can store in dark recess of my brain is astounding).
And you know all that information had to come from somewhere. But before I even start I have been watching way too much Gordon Ramsey, damn and blast that man I have developed a severe case of potty mouth so I apologize in advance.

So it is time to fess up – what were some of your favorite shows when growing up?

I am not talking about the original Battlestar Galatica that would be too cool.
I’m talking about shows you would not be caught dead watching nowadays, shows you simply had to tape when you could not watch them (as on VCR that was back in the days TiVo and iTunes did not exist) – well you get the idea.
Since I’m one of the writers on this blog I will start although I am definitely risking my reputation here. Be as it may here it goes.

Beverly Hills 90210 – now that show was the dog’s bollocks as English would say. Although lets get this straight I’m talking about Beverly Hills before Brenda left and before they turned it into a regular soap opera with characters going away, coming back, dropping down elevator shafts and being blown up.
Call me a purist (said with a heavy sarcasm and sniggering to myself).
Forget about this utter nonsense that is The Hills, Gossip Girl and other whatnots, in my opinion the only series that ever surpassed the high school teen drama was Veronica Mars. But then again Veronica Mars was a class in its own. It comes to no surprise then that CW network hired the creator of Veronica Mars Rob Thomas to do the 90210 spin off. I for one will definitely check out the pilot.

Dynasty – oh Lord, this one is even worse. Krystle and her shoulder pads and Alexis with her birds nest, that old fart Blake Carrington and lets not forget Jake Coleman was Steven on Dynasty way and I mean waaaaay before his was HRG on Heroes. As I did watch it religiously I wish I could tell you it was so bad it was good. Maybe it was at some point. But when I watched the reunion special for the life of me I could not understand why did I start to watch it in the first place.

Santa Barbara – ah yes as in soap opera. I am horrible aren’t I? Ah well you live and learn. Me and my gran used to watch it all the time together. You had the usual works - people being murdered, then being magically resurrected, romance, intrigue, plenty of divorce too, major characters being killed off by natural disasters and so on. To try and give you a short summary of the plot would be futile trust me on that one. 2 interesting tidbits about Santa Barbara – Robin Wright Penn stared in it for 4 years and it was first American series shown in Russia after the Soviet Union fell apart. Needless to say it was a smash hit.
I have tried to think why did I find it so interesting, truth be told I cannot remember. I would have to refresh my memory.

So what are your shameful TV confessions?

Are you sure we weren’t separated at birth? ;)

Santa Barbara was a great soap, so far over the edge!

90210 never did recover after Brenda went away to where ever she went…. Bringing Saved by the Bell’s Thiessen on to replace Brenda’s b*tchiness did not help!

Don’t forget that Dynasty did have a spin off The Colby’s.

Reaching back a bit further I can remember loving The Dukes of Hazzard, and even that show that made Erik Estrada a household name, CHiPS.

Dang, we didn’t even touch on all the great sitcoms….. Do you recall that Janet Jackson played in TWO sitcoms before becoming the great vocalist we know today?? :)

OK, I should wrap up for today, but I do still remember who shot JR, do you? :)

Hawks perhaps we have been separated at birth :)
Oh yes Santa Barbara was the dog’s bollocks everyone and their gran used to watch it… and embarrassing as it is I was always quite fond of Mason :))) Bleeding Brits, I think its the accent that gets me every time…
I’m afraid I never was much interested in Dallas… and I agree I should definitely cover the sitcoms soon :)

Hmmmm Mason :) He was played by Lane Davies…. See, I didn’t even have to look that one up! We had to be separated!! :D

Hawks and I thought I was bad :) How in the world do you remember his name? He was decidedly dishy though :D

I have one of those minds that keeps worthless details like that. Of course, I struggle with remembering simple things like what I had for dinner last night, tho! :D

Me too, thats why I rock the Trivial pursuit… :) And when I cant remember something I write it off to being blond… works like a charm every time :D

  7. Hawksdomain on 03 Apr 2008 at 4:00 am #

Even after dying my hair, I still use the blonde as an excuse… After all, the brain cells must be that way since I was born a blonde, right? :D

Oh my god, you guys - I was completely addicted to Santa Barbara AND 90210. Count me in for the Separated at Birth party.

But, and I’m completely ashamed to admit this one (but the only way to get better is to admit to your problems, right?) - my totally shameful TV watching was Charles in Charge. In college, I watched it every day in syndication. Every day. I flirted with an All My Children addiction briefly b/c of one of my college roommates, but - and let’s face it, now - it was no Santa Barbara. (Remember how the patriarch, Eden’s dad, I can’t remember his name, had that horrible perm?)

Oh, and one more thing on Santa Barbara - it was my DAD (yes, my dad!) who got me addicted to it. We used to watch it together every day after I got home from school, unless I had to stay after for something, then he’d fill me in on what happened!

  10. bertas on 22 Apr 2008 at 8:53 am #

Oh Lord, Amy welcome to the club :)

Not only that C. C. Capwell (because yes sadly I do remember his name) had a case of horrible perm but also he had a sort of blueish tinge to his hair which probably was a case of a rinse-gone-bad :)
But yes it was strangely addictive… and my gran would fill me on the details… in case none taped it for me :)

  11. AmyV on 22 Apr 2008 at 3:38 pm #

OMG, totally. And CC Capwell, what a wonderful villain with the worst hair ever for such a rich man, yes, how could I forget his name? I did love Mason, too. I always felt he was misunderstood and was only as bad as he was because he was trying to get his daddy’s attention. Sigh. Swoon.

  12. bertas on 22 Apr 2008 at 10:46 pm #

Thats what I thought exactly, completely misunderstood. I did like Steven of Dynasty but he was never such a tortured soul. And he didnt have an accent :)
Goodness I felt a bit silly for writing this post, but I’m glad to know I wasnt the only one with the Santa Barbara obsession
