Mistresses - Desperate Housewives minus Botox

mistresses-desperate-housewives-minus-botox

God bless England - at least their writers are not on strike.
And it has to be said BBC does come up with good series, although their latest hit Mistresses smells a bit like an English version of Desperate Housewives. Minus the Botox and Teri Hatcher of course.

Hell you can even see some wobbly bits, not much but still you have got to love BBC – they actually hire actresses and actors that look normal.
The story centers around Trudy (played by Sharon Small) who lost her husband during 9/11 attacks and is coping with her life as a widow, Siobhan (played by Orla Brady) and her husband are desperately trying to conceive, Kathy (Sarah Parish) is a doctor who had an affair with her dying patient while Jessie (Shelley Conn) is a party planner with a taste for sleeping with her superiors.
The plot is tad more realistic and little less predictable (as you can notice I have said only a tad bit) then that of Desperate Housewives and as I said actresses look like normal women rather then starved anorexics who had one liposuction too many. Part drama, part thriller with a good few sex scenes thrown in for a good measure Mistresses make for an easy and undemanding viewing material.

It is not the best thing that has come out of BBC nor it is turdilicious turd but it will do.

Best Stephen King books turned into a movie

best-stephen-king-books-turned-into-a-movie

All hail to the master of horror.

Not many books translate well to the movie screen, however Stephen King and his assorted bogeymen, villains and everyday Joes have been thrilling us for decades. It does not matter much if you are curled in your favorite chair and reading one of his paperbacks or sitting in a dark movie theater, you can get spooked equally well either way. Here is a list of my favorite Stephen King books that have been adapted for the big screen.

The Palace - A Royal Turd

the-palace-a-royal-turd

I have to admit I haven’t seen the latest episode of British royal drama The Palace, but I feel two episodes were enough to make my judgment. This turd of royal proportions will not take long to review. I just wanna ask one question: Was it possible to make this show any more obvious? From the first five minutes I could see where this show was going. From the sick father, alcoholic mother, bitch of a sister and screwup of a brother. The most obvious is the protagonist, the innocent young prince who just wants to be a simple normal guy. Oh, just for the fun of the plot they included a older married mistress in the mix to complete the circle. Turd, turd, turd. I almost forgot there’s another sister in the picture, but we have no idea what her deal is. She will blossom around episode five when young girls become bored of watching shirtless prince and ratings fall below room temperature.

One thing is good in this series. That’s the performance of Zoe Telford. Although, her character is god awful predictable like the rest of this turd, she shines in it.

That’s it!
The End.
I told you this is not going to take long.

Lost returns

lost-returns

The wait is over – Lost is finally back this week.

That is great news as there are virtually no more decent shows left (well apart from Jericho that returns on February 8th, but that is a story for next week).

But what to expect? If you have asked me that after the end of season 2, I would say a lot. This time around I am not so sure. There is no denying the fact that the last episode of Lost was mind-blowingly good. But good few episode before that were not.
And I do have to admit I miss the intensity and mind blowing twists and turns of first 2 seasons.
Remember the discovery of hatch? Remember when the light shone through that hatch door? When Ben turned out to be who he was? The map on the hatch doors? The numbers, the hatch imploding, the big purple light in the sky? Tsss those were the good old days. At the moment I am ambivalent but truth be told a bit eager as well to see what happens next.

Be as it may, here is a little collection of interesting tidbits to keep you ticking and get you in the mood for Thursday night.

Things I have learned watching QI

things-i-have-learned-watching-qi

  • The answer never is the blue whale
  • If you are unsure of the answer just keep listing things, you are bound to get something right - eventually
  • Do not try to make sense out of QI points system
  • If you eat only rabbit you eventually die. On the other hand if you have some peas and carrot with your rabbit you should be ok.

Breaking bad is not bad at all

breaking-bad-is-not-bad-at-all

Breaking bad is like breaking sweat after a particularly nasty nightmare. And I do mean it in a good way.

The latest series to air on amc is about a high school chemistry teacher, who is having a mid-life crisis of a sort. His wife is pregnant, his son is an invalid and he has to take a second job in a car wash to support his family. If that is not bad enough he is diagnosed with a case of terminal lung cancer, although he is not a smoker. Add to that crappy health insurance - it would tip anyone over the edge. So what does our chemistry teacher does? Starts producing meth.

Created by Vince Gilligan (whose previous credits include X-files) Breaking bad is a combination of drama and dark comedy. And when I say dark I do mean it. In the first half hour the desperation and hopelessness are virtually palpable and it sticks to you like a glue. I would advise finding your happy place just before you watch it – that is if you have one. But the second part is so hilariously funny and trust me you cannot imagine what kind of situations a chem teacher who produces meth will get in. You will just have to take my word for it and see for yourself.
The performance by Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle, Little Miss Sunshine) is absolutely brilliant and I do hope we will see more then 7 episodes that have been filmed prior to the strike.

Heath Ledger found dead

heath-ledger-found-dead

Oh Lord what a terrible terrible news.

According to numerous sources Heath Ledger (who was only 28) was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

He dazzled us and the Academy with his performance in Brokeback Mountain, he played Billy Bob Thorton’s suicidal son in Monster’s Balls and made girls swoon with his performances in The Knight’s Tale, Patriot and 10 things I hate about you. Heath was also currently working on Terry Gilliam’s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Dark Knight, the new Batman movie where he played Joker.
His current movie that is showing in the cinemas is I’m Not There, a movie about Bob Dylan.

In September Australian born Heath has split from his partner Michelle Williams with whom he had a 23-month old daughter Matilda.

What a terrible loss of a wonderful and talented young actor.

Idleness At Its Best

idleness-at-its-best

I know this is post might be a small digression from our usual topics, but once I saw this YouTube Video I had to post it. As a monument to human idleness I was obliged to post this. This video shows us the way this world is coming to. Not only have we lost the need for keyboards with new iPhone, but now we no longer have the need to touch any surface at all (Donald Trump can finally take a sigh of relief). Watch this video and be shocked, or amazed which ever one suits your fancy.
