Blast from the past – Family Ties

Today we will be looking at Family Ties. Now is there any girl growing up in the 80s who did not have a crush on Michael J. Fox at some point or another?

For any of you not familiar with the show Family Ties was a sit-com that aired on NBC. It revolved around the life of a Keaton family. There was Alex (Michael J. Fox) who was a bit of a pain in the arse and a conservative Republican that went on and on about economy. Then there were his 2 sisters Mallory (Justine Bateman) who was a bit of an airhead (although at the time I did think she was the high of fashion chic) and Jennifer (Tina Yothers) who had all the markings of the youngest child. The parents were Elyse (Meredith Baxter – Birney) and Steven (Michael Gross). They were hippy, dippy parents who had a bit of a trouble coping with the fact their oldest son has a Young Republican card.

One of my favorite regulars was Mallory’s boyfriend Nick (the one that resembled Slyvester Stallone in Rambo) who had some lines to die for. It was one of the most popular TV shows in the 80s right there with Cosby Show and Cheers, but it is no wonder the storylines were interesting, the conversations were funny and besides it had Michael J. Fox in it, who more do you need? Family Ties ended after 7 seasons with Alex P. Keaton leaving for New York to start working on Wall Street.

Interesting tidbits: It was Ronald Reagan’s favorite show, Courtney Cox played Alex’s girlfriend and Tom Hanks made an appearance as Elyse’s younger alcoholic brother.
